Frequently asked questions

Which trek to Machu Picchu is the hardest?

Salkantay and Choquequirao are the hardest, for altitude and for daily distance. The Classic Inca Trail is demanding but shorter, and the Inca Jungle is the gentlest of the multi-day routes.

Do I need a permit for the Inca Trail?

Yes. The Classic Inca Trail needs a nominal permit issued by the government, with a daily limit. Salkantay, Lares and Choquequirao do not use that permit system.

How much does a trek from Cusco cost?

Our treks start at US$137 per person for the shortest route. Multi-day treks to Machu Picchu cost more because they include the train back and the entrance ticket.

What is the best month to trek in Cusco?

The dry season, from May to September, has the most stable trails. The Classic Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance.

How high do the treks go?

The highest pass in this category reaches 4,700 m. Spend two or three days in Cusco before any trek so the body adapts to the altitude.
