  • The walk: 1.5 to 2 hours up, 30 to 60 minutes at the top, about an hour down.
  • The drive: about 3 hours each way through the Vilcanota valley.
  • Horses: local families rent them for part of the climb. The last slope is on foot.
  • Weather: dry with hard frost at dawn from May to October. Rain, cloud and sometimes snow from November to April.
  • Acclimatization: two or three days in Cusco first. Never on your arrival day.

How high is Rainbow Mountain, really?

Altitude profile of the Rainbow Mountain day: Cusco 3,350 m at 4:00, Llacto 4,630 m at 7:30, top at 5,036 to 5,200 m, back in Cusco at 17:00

The day in one line: from Cusco at 3,350 m to the top of Vinicunca at 5,036 to 5,200 m and back. Infographic: Viajes Cusco Perú

Rainbow Mountain stands between about 5,036 m and 5,200 m above sea level, and the gap comes from what each source measures. Wikipedia gives 5,036 m (16,522 ft) for the peak. Andina, Peru's state news agency, which has covered the mountain since it opened to tourism in 2016, puts the summit lookout at 5,200 m (17,060 ft). Operators, us included, have printed 5,036, 5,100 and 5,200 m over the years.

For your body the math is simpler. On our route the trail starts at 4,630 m (15,190 ft) and climbs 400 to 570 m. The top is 800 to 1,000 m higher than Dead Woman's Pass, the highest point of the Inca Trail at 4,215 m.

The white giant to the east is Ausangate, 6,384 m (20,945 ft), the highest peak in the Cusco region according to Andina. Local communities treat it as an apu, a guardian mountain.

What does the day look like, hour by hour?

The day runs about 13 hours, and most of it is road. This is how it plays out on our Vinicunca tour.

Time What happens Altitude
4:00 to 4:30 a.m. Hotel pickup in Cusco 3,350 m (11,000 ft)
4:30 to 7:00 a.m. Drive south along the Vilcanota valley
About 7:00 a.m. Hot buffet breakfast on the way
About 7:30 a.m. Trail starts at Llacto 4,630 m (15,190 ft)
7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Climb to the lookout up to 5,036 to 5,200 m
About 10:00 a.m. 30 to 60 minutes at the top
11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Descent to Llacto
About 12:30 p.m. Buffet lunch
About 5:00 p.m. Back at your hotel in Cusco

4:00 a.m.: the pickup

The van stops at your hotel in the dark. In the dry season Cusco is cold at this hour: the airport averages a July low of 1.2 °C (34 °F). Dress in the layers you will hike in. Most people sleep through the first hour.

Breakfast in the valley

The road follows the Vilcanota river south. Andina describes the classic route through Andahuaylillas, Quiquijana and Checacupe, the villages of our South Valley tour. Our route turns off at Cusipata toward the community of Chillihuani and the Llacto sector, the access the district of Cusipata opened in 2018 with a road, a footpath and a lookout. After about 2.5 hours there is a hot buffet breakfast with bread, eggs and coca tea. Eat, even if you are not hungry.

The last stretch is a dirt road that climbs out of the fields into open puna, with llamas and alpacas grazing beside it and the first snow peaks in the windshield.

7:30 a.m.: Llacto and the first steps

You step out at 4,630 m into thin, very dry air. The first part of the trail is a wide path with a gentle grade beside a stream. Walk slower than you think you need to. Your guide sets the pace and stops often so the group can breathe.

This is where you meet the horse handlers. Andina describes the same pattern on both access routes: about an hour of walking to the horse station, horses for part of the climb, everyone on foot at the end.

Should you take a horse?

Take one if the altitude hits you hard or you want to save energy for the top. In 2016 Andina reported S/70 to 90 for the round trip, or half for one way. Our guides now see about S/50 to 80 per stretch, paid in cash to the handler. That is roughly US$15 to 23 at the Central Reserve Bank rate of S/3.44 per dollar in October 2026. The horse stops before the final slope, so plan to walk that part.

9:30 a.m.: the last slope and the lookout

The final section is short and steep, a zigzag of loose dirt and steps up to the ridge. Expect to stop often, even if you run at home. Then the slope opens and the stripes appear across the valley: pink, red, ochre, mustard, green and white in parallel bands.

Andina, quoting the Geological Society of Peru, explains that the colors come from layers of marine, lake and river sediment that tectonic movement lifted and tilted. Oxidation, moisture and erosion did the rest. Red comes from iron-rich clays, green from iron and magnesium minerals, mustard from sulfur-bearing sandstone and white from quartz sand. Snow and ice once covered much of the slope, and Wikipedia notes the glacier caps were gone by 2013.

You get 30 to 60 minutes up there. On a clear morning Ausangate fills the view. Take your photos, drink, eat something and start down before the wind chills you.

The Red Valley option

From the ridge a path drops into the Red Valley, a fold of rust-colored slopes behind the mountain that links Vinicunca with the Pitumarca side. On our tour the Red Valley viewpoint is optional and depends on the group's pace and the weather. If you feel strong, ask your guide at the top.

Noon to 5:00 p.m.: down, lunch and the ride back

The descent takes about an hour, easy on the lungs and hard on the knees, so use poles. Lunch is a hot buffet with soup and Andean dishes. Then the long drive back, and you reach your hotel around 5:00 p.m., tired and ready for an early night.

How hard is the Rainbow Mountain hike?

It is short but hard, and the difficulty is the altitude, not the trail. No technical skill is needed. What makes it tough is walking uphill above 4,600 m with far less oxygen in every breath than you are used to. Fit people who skipped acclimatization often struggle, and slow, steady walkers often do better than they expect.

Our tour notes say the hike is not recommended for people with heart or respiratory conditions, for pregnant women or for children under 8. If in doubt, ask your doctor before you book.

How do you avoid altitude sickness at Vinicunca?

Give your body time first. The CDC lists Cusco at about 3,350 m (11,000 ft) and says acute mountain sickness usually starts 2 to 12 hours after arrival. Headache is the main sign, often with poor appetite, dizziness, fatigue or nausea. The CDC also notes that day trips to high altitude with an evening return to lower ground are much less stressful on the body, and that is exactly this tour.

  • Two or three nights in Cusco first, or in the lower Sacred Valley. Put Vinicunca near the end of your stay. Our altitude and acclimatization guide explains how to plan those first days.
  • Walk slowly from the first step and drink water.
  • Tell your guide early about a strong headache or nausea. The CDC warns that confusion, loss of balance and drowsiness can signal a serious form of altitude illness. The answer is to go down.

What is the weather like at Rainbow Mountain each month?

Dry and clear from May to October, wet from November to April. Andina warns that rainy-season snow can cover the stripes and make the summit harder to reach. There is no public weather station at Vinicunca, so the table uses Cusco airport (3,249 m) as the regional reference. The trailhead is much colder: Andina reported a daytime average of 13 °C (55 °F) at Vinicunca and night lows near -5 °C (23 °F).

Months Rain in Cusco (average) What to expect on the mountain
May to August 3 to 7 mm a month Clearest sky, brightest colors, frost at dawn, busiest
September 18 mm Still mostly dry, a little quieter
October 55 mm Afternoon clouds, mornings usually clear
November to December 77 to 125 mm Rain more often, cloud on the ridge
January to March 106 to 153 mm Wettest months, snow possible, colors often hidden
April 38 mm Rain easing, green slopes, fewer people

Rain data: NOAA normals for Cusco airport, as published on Wikipedia. For the same seasons from the Machu Picchu side, see our guide to the best time to visit Machu Picchu.

What should you wear and pack?

Layers. You start in frost and can finish in hard sun with wind on the ridge. Bring a windproof and waterproof jacket, a fleece or down layer, gloves and a hat, hiking shoes with good grip, SPF 50+ sunscreen and category 3 or 4 sunglasses, at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water, snacks, and cash in small soles notes for the horse, toilets and a hot drink at the top. Our Peru packing list covers the rest of the trip.

Vinicunca or Palcoyo: which one should you choose?

Choose Vinicunca for the famous view and Palcoyo for a shorter, gentler walk. Andina gives Palccoyo (also spelled Palcoyo) a top at 4,971 m (16,309 ft) and a walk of 45 to 60 minutes. Pallay Punchu is in the full three-way comparison.

Vinicunca Palcoyo
Top 5,036 to 5,200 m 4,971 m
Climb 90 to 120 min 45 to 60 min
Round-trip walk about 7 km (4.3 mi) 2 to 3 km (1.2 to 1.9 mi)
Crowds Up to 2,000 visitors a day, per Andina Far fewer
Best for The iconic view, fit and acclimatized hikers Families, less time, less fitness
Our tour From US$137 From US$137

Walk distances come from our tour notes. For something wilder, the Pallay Punchu trek, from US$147, is about 10 km (6.2 mi) with far fewer people.

Is there an entrance fee at Rainbow Mountain?

Usually a small fee collected by local communities, and the amount has changed over time. In 2016 Andina reported S/10 per person, collected by the municipality of Pitumarca. In July 2024, after a dispute between communities over access, Andina reported free entry through Cusipata during a truce. We found no official 2026 rate, so carry soles in cash and your guide will tell you on the day.

Access can also change with the weather. On December 3, 2025, Andina reported that a vehicle bridge at Chillihuani, on the Cusipata side, collapsed after heavy rain, and tours switched to the Pitumarca route that day.

What we do and what we don't

We are Viajes Cusco Perú, a tour agency based in Cusco. On the Vinicunca day tour we provide hotel pickup, transport, a guide, breakfast, lunch and trekking poles. We do not own the horses: they belong to local families and you pay the handler directly. We cannot promise the colors, because cloud and snow decide that. We are not doctors, so take health questions to yours. If weather or a road closes the route, we follow the local authorities.
