The Perfect Cusco, Sacred Valley & Lake Titicaca Itinerary (7 to 10 Days)

Four altitudes decide the order of this trip: Sacred Valley 2,792 m, Machu Picchu 2,430 m, Cusco 3,399 m and Puno, on Lake Titicaca, 3,830 m. Written that way the route plans itself, you sleep low first, climb as the days pass, and leave the highest place for the end, when your body has had the 3 to 5 days that acclimatisation actually takes.
That is the opposite of what most itineraries do, which is land in Cusco at 3,399 m and start walking the same afternoon.
The days follow from it. Cusco and Machu Picchu on their own need four to five days to be worth the flight. Adding Lake Titicaca takes it to eight or nine, because Puno is a travel day away from Cusco and the lake deserves two. Our own circuits are built on those numbers: Lima, Cusco and Puno in 9 days from US$1,660 per person, and Peru in 10 days from US$1,720, both starting in Lima and not including international flights.
Two legs to plan around: the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu takes about 1 hour 20 minutes each way, and Machu Picchu entry is by time slot on a fixed circuit, bought in advance.

Itinerary Overview: High Altitude and Smart Routing

Days 1-3: The Premium Sacred Valley Experience

Day 1: Arrival and Lowering the Elevation
Upon landing at the Cusco airport (3,400 m / 11,152 ft), your private transfer will pick you up and head directly down into the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas (approx. 2,870 m / 9,416 ft). Spending your first two nights here allows your body to acclimate much faster in a warmer, more oxygen-rich environment. Spend a relaxed afternoon enjoying the pristine mountain views and light local dining.
Day 2 & 3: Master Masonry and Agricultural Genius
Dedicate these days to exploring the architectural wonders of the valley. Visit the fascinating circular agricultural laboratories of Moray and the ancient, pre-Inca salt pans of Maras, where salt is still hand-harvested from natural springs. Explore the massive fortress terraces that guard the valley and wander through traditional artisanal markets filled with vibrant textiles.
Day 4: The Wonder of Machu Picchu

This morning, you will board a premium panoramic train, such as PeruRail’s Vistadome or Inca Rail’s The 360°, from the valley station toward Aguas Calientes. The train ride winds through spectacular granite canyons along the rushing Urubamba River.
Upon arrival, a short shuttle bus ride takes you to the main gate of Machu Picchu Sanctuary. With your certified private guide, you will enter using your pre-booked circuit ticket to marvel at the iconic stone temples, royal chambers, and panoramic viewpoints. After an immersive historical tour, return by train to your valley or Cusco hotel.
Day 5: Discovering Imperial Cusco
Spend a full day exploring the historic core of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Spanish colonial architecture sits directly on top of massive, polished Inca stone foundations. Visit the spectacular Temple of the Sun (Qorikancha), stroll through the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas, and marvel at the colossal stone walls of the Sacsayhuamán fortress overlooking the city.

Day 6: The Scenic Route of the Sun
Today, you will embark on a spectacular day-long overland journey south from Cusco to Puno across the high Altiplano plains. Known as the Route of the Sun, this scenic drive includes stops at the colonial baroque church of Andahuaylillas, the massive Inca Temple of Raqch'i, and the scenic mountain pass at La Raya (4,335 m / 14,222 ft). You will arrive in Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, by late afternoon.
Day 7 & 8: The Floating Islands of Uros and Taquile
Embark on a premium boat excursion across the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable body of water in the world (3,812 m / 12,500 ft).
- Uros Islands: Visit the famous floating islands constructed entirely out of native Totora reeds by the ancient Uros people.
- Taquile Island: Continue to a fixed island renowned for its preserved cultural traditions and world-class textile weaving, which is recognized by UNESCO. Enjoy a traditional fresh trout lunch with breathtaking views of the lake stretching toward Bolivia.
