The 12-day package adds Copacabana and the Isla del Sol on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. Copacabana is a pilgrimage town with the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana. Isla del Sol is the sacred Inca island where, according to legend, the sun god Inti was born. The boat crossing of Lake Titicaca is one of the most special moments of the circuit.
What do we see on Isla del Sol?
Isla del Sol offers Inca ruins (Pilkokaina temple and Inca spring), Aymara communities that maintain ancestral traditions, impressive views of the lake and the Andes, and trekking paths among Inca terraces. The boat trip from Copacabana is part of the experience. There are no vehicles on the island, only walking paths.
How is the Puno-Bolivia border crossing?
From Puno we take a tourist bus to the Yunguyo (Peru) Kasani (Bolivia) border. The immigration process takes 1-2 hours. We then continue to Copacabana (8 km from the border) where we spend the night. The next day we travel to La Paz. The guide will assist you with all formalities. You need to carry your valid original passport.
Do I need a visa for Bolivia?
Most Latin American and European countries do not require a visa for Bolivia. US, Canadian, and Australian citizens must obtain the Visa a la Boliviana on arrival at the airport or border (cost ~US$160). Bring passport-size photos and cash USD for payment if applicable. What is the altitude in Bolivia and how does it affect you?
La Paz is at 3,600 m in the center and El Alto at 4,100 m. Copacabana is at 3,841 m and Isla del Sol varies between 3,800 and 4,000 m. By then you will have acclimatized in Cusco (3,400 m) for several days, which helps. Continue drinking plenty of fluids, walk slowly, and drink coca tea. Altitude symptoms are normal the first few days and pass with rest.
What currency do I need in Bolivia?
The Boliviano (BOB) is the official currency. US dollars (USD) are accepted at hotels and tourist restaurants. In Copacabana and Isla del Sol, cash is almost indispensable for markets and meals outside the tour. Carry bolivianos or US dollars in cash. The approximate exchange rate is 6.9 BOB per 1 USD. How does the 12-day circuit differ from the 10-day and 14-day ones?
The 10-day circuit ends in Puno with Lake Titicaca. The 12-day crosses into Bolivia and adds Copacabana, Isla del Sol and La Paz: an epic ending with lake views from the Bolivian shore. The 14-day goes further: from La Paz it takes a flight to Uyuni to see the Salar de Uyuni (10,582 km² / 4,086 sq mi, the world's largest natural mirror), the Sol de Mañana geysers and Laguna Colorada with flamingos. If you want Bolivia complete but cannot do 14 days, the 12-day is perfect. If the Salar de Uyuni is a dream you want to fulfill, choose the 14-day.
